With the generous support of the German Embassy in Athens, the Athens State Orchestra began to stage educational activities and concerts in the Cyclades in the autumn of 2015 under the umbrella title "In(sisting on) the Cyclades".
This initiative was an effort on our part to respond to the needs of those residents of remote islands who remain there during the difficult winter period, and do not often have the opportunity to attend events of this kind. These events give them the opportunity to escape the demands and obligations of their everyday lives as they enjoy a concert by one of the music ensembles made up of musicians from Greece’s leading orchestra. The children also experience, often for the first time, both classical works by famous Greek and international composers and contemporary compositions, while also familiarizing themselves with the instruments of the orchestra up close through our specially-designed educational activities. In addition, delegates from the Embassy meet with local students and teachers of German and provide them with educational material that makes teaching easier and enhances their knowledge.
The programme was welcomed with such enthusiasm, and earned such a reputation, that we had little choice but to broaden its geographical horizons. Now covering the entire Aegean, it has been renamed "In(sisting) on the Aegean".
