Poster for Shostakovich’s 7th symphony premiere in Leningrad, 1942

War and Peace III

The internationally acclaimed pianist Giorgos-Emmanuel Lazaridis performs Mozart's dramatic Concerto in C minor. After the success of his appearance last season, Frank Beermann returns to the podium to conduct Shostakovich's Leningrad Symphony, a work inextricably bound up with the harsh realities of siege of the Soviet city during World War Two. The Symphony employs a disarming musical realism to convey the horrors of war, but also to send out a clear message of peace, freedom and dignity.
